General Robert E. Lee
(1807-1870)

As commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, General Lee earned a reputation as one of the most audacious military leaders in history. When John Brown raided Harpers Ferry it was Lee who led U.S. troops to end the attack and restore order. At the outbreak of the Civil War his allegiance was to his home state. In the mountains of Western Virginia he suffered early defeats but gained valuable experience for later victories that ultimately made him an icon.
