Frances
Johnston
(1864-1952) Photographer
Born in Grafton, Johnston moved with her family to
Washington D.C. when she was very young. She was a
pioneer in the field of photography capturing events,
people, and architecture of significant historical
importance. Such luminaries as Mark Twain, Booker
T. Washington, and Presidents McKinley, Roosevelt
and Taft are among the subjects of her photographs.
Her work in photojournalism at the end of the 19th
century up through the 1950s served to remove barriers
to women in that field. The Library of Congress holds
over 25,000 of her photographs and thousands of her
writings.
