The interesting...
and unexpected
While a workman was running new
electrical wires in the attic, he unexpectedly discovered an unknown
"compartment" in the attic (while drilling an access hole for
the new wire). Inside he found items including a glass jug of wine
(alas, gone VERY bad) and numerous, straw bottle protectors. The
newspapers included a 1924 edition of THE SWALLOW, a newspaper for Hot
Springs, VA and White Sulpher Springs, WV. The center article
concerned bootlegging in the state... an interesting companion to hidden
alcohol.
It was discovered that a mirror,
hidden "closet" was located on the other side of the attic
(in the oldest portion of the house). The closets are hidden
behind shelving, which must first be removed to gain access to the
small spaces.
The closets have had lighting installed
(see bulb photo below). The date of this installation has not been
determined, but judging from the wiring, it was not very recent.
It appeared that access to
the closets has not occurred for some time. This, along with
the fact that Miss Hubbard never mentioned the compartments (she
was known for her delight in telling stories about the house), leads
us to believe that the closets were unknown to the Hubbards.
The home was purchased from the Crowley family in 1941, so perhaps
this is the last time any inhabitant knew of the hidden closets.
There are no items in the closets dating from 1941 or later.
