At seventeen, to escape an arranged marriage, Edmonds fled Canada for
the U.S. dressed as a traveling bible salesman. When the Civil War
began, she continued her disguise as a man and enlisted in the Union Army,
later earning the reputation as a brilliant spy for the Union forces.
