Dr. Lud Gutmann, Hazel Ruby McQuain professor of neurology at West Virginia University School of Medicine and author of The Immobile Man, stresses the importance of listening to his patients - listening to the stories they have to tell - in order to discover the cause of the symptoms and clues to the treatment. Modern doctors are obsessed with the technological advances that dominate current medical practice. Their focus is on the tests and images and not the patients' history. This drives the use of excessive and unnecessary testing, increases the cost of health care, and results in less satisfactory medical outcomes.
