Clara Barton

(1821-1912)

Barton was the first woman allowed to tend the wounded on the front lines during the Civil War and became known as “The Angel of the Battlefield.” She delivered medical supplies, established field hospitals, cooked for the wounded, cleaned operating rooms and cared for the suffering from both North and South. After the war she led a four year search for missing soldiers. She is well known as the founder of the American Red Cross.
