Edgar
Allan Poe
(1809-1849)
Perhaps
best known for his tales of the macabre,
Poe was a prolific author, poet, respected
literary critic, and creator of the
modern detective story. His writing
often dealt with subject matter previously
considered too shocking for sensitive
readers. His works include such classics
as The Tell Tale Heart, The Black
Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven,
Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and
the Pendulum, and The Fall
of the House of Usher. His difficult
life and thrilling stories continue
to intrigue readers.
